Software for Innovative Energy Research Application (SIERRA) Group




The Sierra Group is the IERC software development team, whose primary aim is to deliver intuitive transparent software applications that contribute to the digitalisation of the energy sector, and promote the use of software in efficient management of energy processes.

Additionally, Sierra aims to contribute to strategic energy research and the role software and systems can play in their development and operation.

2018 was a very successful year for the SIERRA Group, achieving successes in the EU Horizon 2020 with the BIM4EEB Project and the Irish Governments Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF) with the CENTS project.

The SIERRA Group are interested in perticipating in energy related projects requiring software tools development. We have a extensive expertise in our team, in areas such as building energy performance, BIM, Blockchain and Data Management, we also have support from the wider IERC team in areas which may be relevant to other projects.

Brian O Regan

Brian joined the team in July 2016, and has a MEngSc in Architecture, Engineering and Construction and a BSc in Computer Science, both from University College Cork.

Brian is the team lead of the Software for Innovative Energy Research Application (SIERRA) group, which is responsible for delivering high-quality, well-tested, documented software and contribution to energy research projects.

Previously, he spent over a decade in Technical Services / Facilities Management in the healthcare industry.

His interests are in the area of Software Development, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Blockchain, AI and Data Analytics.

Eoin O Leidhin

Eoin joined the team in December 2017, and has a Masters in Engineering and a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering both from University of Limerick.

He previously worked with a heating distribution company, sizing and designing underfloor, wall and ceiling heating systems.

Eoin also worked for many years designing and developing website and software applications, including developing paperless form systems for energy audits and installations.

He has also previously worked as a Logistics Manager in the Educational Sector where he oversaw energy improvements and developing a long-term sustainability plan for the college.

Eoin’s role is to assist on various IERC projects with a particular focus on building energy analysis.

CENTS - Cooperative ENergy Trading System


CENTS is a collaborative project coordinated by the IERC and will rely on the industry experience from MPower, mSemicon and CRES, in addition to the research capabilities of UCC, NUIG, and DIT. It is a disruptive technology platform for the electricity sector where consumers and communities will be empowered with the necessary infrastructure to generate their own electricity, earn from the electricity generation, and finally, to be an integral part of decarbonizing their homes and communities for sustainable living.

BIM4EEB (H2020)


BIM4EEB aims to foster the renovation industry by developing an attractive and powerful BIM-based toolset able to support designers in the design and planning phase, construction companies to efficiently carry out the work and service companies to provide attractive solutions for building retrofitting. Additionally, public and private owners will be able to use a tool that eases decision making and asset management, thanks to the exploitation of augmented reality and the use of updated digital logbooks. BIM4EEB will deliver an innovative common BIM management system with linked data and a set of tools.

EnerPort - P2P Energy Trading


Electricity sector is transiting through a major infrastructural change where several new business models are being developed. EnerPort is an industry-led collaborative research project that will investigate new market models for peer to peer energy trading. This involves implementing blockchain technology with smart metering and designing and demonstrating of residential hardware and software platforms in the Power Electronics Research Centre laboratory in NUI Galway. It will develop a new software tool for the co-simulation of electricity distribution networks and blockchain-based peer-to-peer energy trading. This project also aims to address the key challenges around these hardware and software requirements and protocols, as well as issues around markets, regulations and policy.

IEA-EBC Annex 70 – Building Energy Epidemiology


International Energy Agency (IEA) for Energy in Buildings and Communities (EBC) Annex 70 – Building Energy Epidemiology: Analysis of real building energy use at scale. Annex 70 is an international collaboration of researchers, industry and government from across the globe who are working to develop methods for improving the empirical evidence on energy demand in the building stock.

ExpertMV - Energy Audit and M&V System


An Expert Energy Measurement and Verification Solution for Energy Savings in Buildings and Industries (ExpertMV) that involves the development of a software tool for executing energy audits and for measuring and verifying achieved energy savings. The project will support the energy services sector and help address opportunities for increased energy efficiency.
